TURFCARE TIPS

Spring Cleanup:

Blow leaves and debris off lawn.  Do not heavily rake/dethatch as this will expose the soil to weeds.

Mowing:

*Maintain sharp mower blades all season long, as dull blades will tear the grass blade leaving it vulnerable for disease.

*First mowing should be cut at 2″ and bag the clippings, if possible, to remove any over wintering diseases.

*With each mowing, gradually increase mowing height and maintain at 3 ½” – 4” throughout the season. This will help keep the soil moist and shade out weed seeds. Leave grass clippings on the lawn for the rest of the season to provide a free source of nitrogen and organic matter.(Approximately 1 pound per thousand square feet for the season)              *see FAQ page for more detail*

*Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time as this will damage and shock the plant. If you miss a weekly mowing, raise your mower deck and cut 1/3 of the height off. Wait 2 days, lower the deck and cut another 1/3 and continue with maintenance height.

*Change direction each week to reduce compaction and rutting.

*Mowing every 3 days is more beneficial than once per week.

*Beginning at the end of September, follow the 1/3 rule and gradually lower the mowing height to 2”. During the Fall, the grass plant puts its energy into root growth. Mowing shorter at this time of year will aid in root development.

*Fall: Leave your leaves. Return organic matter and nutrients to your lawn by finally mowing/mulching autumn leaves on your lawn instead of removing them.

Irrigation:

Overwatering is far worse than under watering.  However, most lawns require 1”-2” of irrigation per week. One-two long (1 hour) deep (1”) morning (12-8 a.m.) waterings per week is much better than short, frequent irrigation sessions.
