Our goal at Family Organics is to provide our customers with thick, beautiful lawns while using the least amount of pesticides as possible.  While a 100% organic program is possible right from the start, we generally use a combination of organic pro-biotics and fertilizers to bolster soil life, and spot treatments with synthetic weed controls, to keep weeds and crabgrass in check.  Since turf grass thrives in different soil conditions than weeds and crabgrass, we amend the soil to make it conducive for growing grass and not weeds and crabgrass.  All products used to condition the soil are recommended by an independent organic soil laboratory after analysis of soil samples taken from a given lawn.  Family Organics then develops a program built around these test results, lawn condition and appearance, customer expectations and budget.  Basically, the more you do early on to address soil deficiencies, the quicker and better the results.  However, it generally takes about 3-4 years to transition a synthetically treated lawn, or a neglected lawn, to an organic one.

Some nationally franchised companies also claim to be “organic based”. However, their products and fertilizers do not address the soil life. These fertilizers contain high levels of salt and synthetic nitrogen, and a tiny percentage of organic nitrogen, usually sourced from sewer sludge. Although they technically contain an organic component, these products still have the same negative environmental impacts as those simply labeled as synthetic.
